Die Gruppe Soft Machine gehörte zu den Pionieren des britischen Artrock. Die Band formierte sich 1966 in Canterbury in England und spielte dort anfangs eine zentrale Rolle in der Musikszene, wanderte aber bald in die Londoner Musikszene ab. Nichtsdestoweniger gilt sie als eine wichtige Vertreterin des Canterbury Sound.
