Die 1975 in Houston/Texas geborene Tift Merritt zog als Kind mit ihren Eltern nach Raleigh (Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates North Carolina). Zur Musik brachte sie ihr Vater, der ihr “alle Akkorde beibrachte, die man kennen muss” und sie mit der Musik von Bob Dylan und Dolly Parton vertraut machte.
