Aidan Moffat und Malcolm Middleton lernen sich 1995 in ihrer Heimatstadt Falkirk kennen. Obwohl sie sich beide anderweitig musikalisch betätigen, tun sie sich aufgrund gleicher Interessen zusammen um Musik zu machen und nennen sich Arab Strap (nach einer Erektionshilfe). Sie senden Demotapes an Domino und Chemikal Underground, wobei letztere die Gruppe unter Vertrag nimmt. 1996 erscheint The First Big Weekend als erste Single und ist auf vielen Radiostationen zu hören.
