Mott The Hoople , nach einem Roman des amerikanischen Schriftstellers Willard Manus benannt, kam im Mai 1969 in London zustande, als sich Ian Hunter (voc, g, p), am 3. Juni 1939 (nach anderen Quellen 1946) in Shrewsbury geboren, auf eine Anzeige meldete, die der Manager und Producer Guy Stevens im "Melody Maker" aufgegeben hatte.
