Michael Eugene Archer, auch bekannt als "D'Angelo", kommt am 11. Februar 1974 als Sohn eines Pfarrers in Richmond, Virginia auf die Welt, und tupft schon als fünfjähriger Knabe begeistert auf dem Klavier rum. Gerade einmal 18 und inzwischen mit stattlichen musikalischen Fähigkeiten gesegnet, gewinnt er dreimal hintereinander in Harlems Apollo Theatre den "Amateur Contest".
