Iris Dement wurde am 5. Januar 1961 in Paragould, Arkansas, USA, geboren. Sie war das Jüngste von 14 Kindern. Als sie drei Jahre alt war zog sie mit ihrer religioesen Familie nach Kalifornien. Hier wurde sie im Kreise ihrer Geschwister mit Gospelmusik groß. Im Teenageralter kam sie dann mit Country, Folk, und R&B in Berührung. Künstler wie Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan und Joni Mitchell beinflussten sie. Nach dem Abitur zog sie nach Kansas City und ging hier aufs College. Read more on Last.fm
