THE BLUE NILE gründeten sich Anfang der 80er Jahre im schottischen Glasgow und sind ein absolutes Phänomen: obwohl sie in den bislang gut 25 Jahren ihres Bestehens lediglich vier Alben veröffentlicht haben, nie eine Single in den Top 40 hatten und auch nur höchst selten auf Tour gehen,gelten sie unter vielen Musikliebhabern (und vor allem auch Musikerkollegen)als herausragende Vertreter melancholischer Popmusik.
