Gegründet Ende der Siebziger in der South Bronx, wurde die aus den drei Scroggins-Schwestern und ihrer Mutter bestehende Band zu einem der seltenen Crossover von Punk einerseits und Rap beziehungsweise HipHop andererseits, wurden und werden ESG (für "Emerald, Sapphire, Gold") neben etwa James Chance und BUSH TETRAS im Kontext der damaligen No Wave-Szene wahrgenommen, auch wenn das Familienunternehmen eigentlich keinen Punk-Background hatte, von einer D.I.Y.-Attitüde mal abgesehen.
