Mary Chapin Carpenters kosmopolitische Herkunft ist nicht ungewöhnlich für eine Country-Musikerin. Geboren in Princeton als Tochter eines Managers, verbrachte sie einen Teil ihrer Kindheit in Japan. 1974 zog ihre Familie nach Washington, D.C., wo Mary Chapin in der lokalen Folk-Szene musizierte.
