Die Band wurde 1979 von dem damals 17-jährigen Frontmann und Leadsänger Mike Ness in Fullerton, Orange County/Kalifornien gegründet. Stark beeinflusst von Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, Blues und Country fanden sie schnell zu einem eigenen, unverwechselbaren Stil.
