Coil war eine experimentelle Musikgruppe, die 1982 in London gegründet wurde. Ursprünglich als Soloprojekt des Musikers John Balance (von der Band Psychic TV) gedacht, entwickelte sich Coil zu einem Vollzeitprojekt mit seinem Partner Peter Christopherson (ehemals Pionier der Industriemusikgruppe Throbbing Gristle). Balance und Christopherson waren die einzigen konstanten Mitglieder; Weitere Mitwirkende während der gesamten Karriere der Band waren Stephen Thrower, Danny Hyde, Drew McDowall, William Breeze, Thighpaulsandra und Ossian Brown.
