Public Enemy waren Ende der 1980er Jahre eine der einflussreichsten Bands der US-amerikanischen Rapszene. Die Texte der Formation waren sehr kritisch und ihre Auftritte mit Bodyguards, den S1W's (Security of the First World) im Söldnerlook, im Stile öffentlicher Protestveranstaltungen (siehe z. B. das Musikvideo Fight the Power) lösten oft ein starkes Echo in den Medien aus.
