Sun Ra (eigentlich Herman „Sonny“ Blount; * 22. Mai 1914 in Birmingham, Alabama; † 30. Mai 1993) war ein experimenteller, avantgardistischer Jazzkomponist und Jazzmusiker (Piano, Orgel, Keyboard), Poet und Philosoph.

Sun Ra galt schon zu Lebzeiten als Mythos und bis heute als einer der umstrittensten Jazzmusiker. Durch seinen ganz eigenen Stil und seine innovativen Ideen polarisierte er die Kritiker und Publikum.
