Die Band wurde 1972 in Birmingham als die Swell Maps gründeten, und ist der Punk Szene zuzuordnen. Die Brüdern Nicholas (Nikki Sudden - Gitarre, Gesang) und Kevin Paul Godfrey (Epic Soundtracks - Drums, Keyboards) schrieben zunächst zu zweit einige Songs, aber erst 1976 als Richard Earl (Gitarre) und Jowe Head (Bass) einstiegen, kam es zu ihren ersten Auftritten.
Ab da veröffentlichten die Swell Maps einige Singles auf ihrem eigenen Label, und konnten mit „Dresden Style" einen grösseren Erfolg verbuchen. Read more on Last.fm
