Die Band The Doors wurde 1965 von Jim Morrison und Ray Manzarek am Strand von Venice Beach (Kalifornien) gegründet. Der Name entstand in Anlehnung an das Essay von Aldous Huxley The Doors of Perception (Die Pforten der Wahrnehmung), da Morrison selber mit der psychedelischen Droge Meskalin experimentierte. Aldous Huxley entnahm den Titel seines Essays einem Zitat von William Blakes „The Marriage of Heaven and Hell“.
