Emmylou Harris wurde 1947 in Birmingham als Tochter des Offiziers Walter Harris und seiner Frau Eugenia geboren. Sie wuchs in der Nähe von Washington, D. C. auf und begann als Teenager, Gitarre zu spielen und zu singen. Sie studierte an der Universität von North Carolina Schauspiel, brach das Studium jedoch ab und zog nach New York.
